How to track phone calls from your website

What call tracking actually does

A call tracking service gives you extra phone numbers that forward to your real line. Each number is assigned to a source: one for Google Ads, one for organic search, one for the Google Business Profile, one for print or vehicle signage. When someone calls, the system records which number they dialed, so the report can say the call came from the ad rather than the billboard.

The more useful versions swap the number on your website dynamically, so a visitor who arrived from an ad sees a different number from one who arrived from search. Nobody notices, and every call gets attributed.

The SEO worry, and how to avoid it

Owners often hear that changing the phone number hurts local rankings, because consistency of name, address and phone matters. The concern is real but the solution is standard:

  • Keep your real number in your Google Business Profile as the primary, and add the tracking number as the secondary. Google supports exactly this.
  • Keep your real number in your directory listings, your schema markup and your footer.
  • Use dynamic swapping only on the website, where the change is per-visitor rather than baked into the page a crawler sees.

Done that way, your citations stay consistent and your reporting improves.

What to measure once it is running

  • Calls by source. Which channel produced the phone ringing.
  • Call length. Set a minimum, usually 60 seconds, below which a call does not count as a lead. Wrong numbers and hang-ups are not leads.
  • Missed calls by hour. The most uncomfortable and most valuable report you will run. Most service businesses find a pattern within a week.
  • First-time versus repeat callers. Marketing should be judged on new customers, not on existing ones ringing the same number.

A simple setup for a small business

  1. One tracking number for Google Ads, connected to the ad account so calls appear as conversions.
  2. One dynamic number for the website, swapped by source.
  3. The real number everywhere else: profile, directories, invoices, vehicles.
  4. A 60 second minimum for what counts as a lead.
  5. A monthly review of missed calls by hour, and a change to either staffing or ad schedule based on it.

Recording calls: check your state

Call recording is useful for training and for settling arguments about lead quality, but consent rules vary by state, and Washington requires all parties to consent. If you record, use the announcement your provider offers and tell your team. It is a two-minute setup that avoids a real problem.

Common questions

Does call tracking hurt local SEO?

Not if the real number stays in your profile, directories and schema and the tracking number is only swapped for website visitors. That is the standard setup.

Can I do this without paying for software?

You can use a second number and put it only in ads, which is crude but free. Anything more granular needs a service, and the good ones cost less than a single wasted week of ad spend.

What if most of my calls come from the Google profile?

That is common and useful to know. It usually means the profile deserves more attention than the website, at least until the map position is solid.

How does this connect to Google Ads?

Import the calls as conversions so the account can optimize toward calls rather than clicks. Without that, the algorithm is bidding for the wrong outcome.

Where to start

Before buying anything, count last month's missed calls in your phone system and note the hours. If there is a pattern, you have found money that no ad account change would have recovered. When you are ready to attribute the rest, it is part of how we run Google Ads management.
